The New Colossus
Not like the brazen giant of Greek fame,
With conquering limbs astride from land to land;
Here at our sea-washed, sunset gates shall stand
A mighty woman with a torch, whose flame
Is the imprisoned lightning, and her name
Mother of Exiles. From her beacon-hand
Glows world-wide welcome; her mild eyes command
The air-bridged harbor that twin cities frame.
“Keep ancient lands, your storied pomp!” cries she
With silent lips. “Give me your tired, your poor,
Your huddled masses yearning to breathe free,
The wretched refuse of your teeming shore.
Send these, the homeless, tempest-tost to me,
I lift my lamp beside the golden door!”
-Emma Lazarus
I had to sit through 20 minutes of the woefully inadequate public speaking ability of our president, but he did manage to hit a few nails on the head when it comes to our immigration policy. The main point being that we need a comprehensive plan. Not just sure up the borders, but also address the illegal immigrants already within our country.
He, meaning his speech writers and political handlers, put emphasis on using the already run-ragged National Guard to supplement our border patrol, as well as using “biometric-tamper-proof†I.D. cards to track legal immigrants.
Coming from a region and town where the majority of the population is paler than milky white I have no deep seeded feelings on the multifarious issues of immigration, but whatever the solution that is arrived at through policy it should hold true to the fact that our nation was built on the backs of immigrants, many of which didn’t filter into our country through legitimate channels.
